These commercially prepared rovings are made from various Ryeland cross fleeces from a local mixed flock of sheep. The Ryeland breed of sheep is one of the oldest British breeds and, until recently, was classified as a rare breed. Now sufficient numbers of them exist for them to be re-classed as a "minority breed". It has a fibre diameter of 26-32 microns with a staple length of 3-6 inches so the spinners sweet spot! Great for spinning and peg looming - doesn't felt particularly well.
