Wool Month is here, and at Woolplay, we’re thrilled to join a national celebration that shines a spotlight on all things wool—from the softest skeins to the centuries-old skills that bring this natural fibre from flock to crafting hands. Whether you’re already a wool lover or new to its charms, as the weather is getting chillier, October is the perfect time to explore the benefits, beauty, and heritage of 100% British sheep wool.
What is Wool Month?
Wool Month, organised by the Campaign for Wool, is held every October across the UK to champion wool’s role in sustainable fashion, eco-friendly interiors, and artisan crafts. The movement brings together farmers, retailers, crafters, and communities in a month-long celebration highlighting the “why” behind choosing wool—renewable, biodegradable, and high-performance, this fibre offers something for everyone from the eco-conscious to creativity seekers.
Why Wool Matters—Now More Than Ever
As the world shifts towards sustainability, wool stands out for its gentle impact on the environment. Every year, sheep regrow their fleeces, providing a fresh supply of fibre that biodegrades at the end of its life, leaving no microplastic waste behind. By choosing British wool from local flocks, like those at Woolplay, crafters are supporting rural communities, preserving rare breeds, and reducing their carbon footprint—making wool a truly responsible and rewarding material for textiles and fashion.
Discovering Woolplay’s British Yarn
This Wool Month, Woolplay is proud to feature yarns from our own flock of Liecester Longwool sheep as well as yarns from other local flocks of sheep which we have had produced. Our collection showcases the diversity of British sheep breeds suitable for woolly crafts, offering unique textures and stories in every skein. With provenance and traceability as core values, Woolplay connects crafters to the rich landscape, tradition, and ethical practices behind their yarn.
