Poll Dorset sheep are white‑faced and naturally hornless (“poll”), with a broad, strong build and a dense, short “down”‑type fleece of white wool. Although they were developed in Australia from the Dorset Horn in the mid‑20th century, the Poll Dorset was reintroduced to the UK in the 1950s, where it swiftly became popular and now outnumbers the horned variety in registrations.  They typically have bright eyes, a pink nose and lips free from pigmentation, and a muscular frame suited to efficient meat production.  An unusual feature is the ewes can come into season anytime of the year rather than just the autumn.
Being a downs breed, their bouncy fleece is perfect for woolly makes (apart from felting).  It has a 3-4 inch staple and a micron count of 33 - 34. It takes dye well but doesn't felt easily.
